There is a paucity of recent literature regarding the outcomes of open repair of rotator cuff tears. In this study, we reviewed 20 patients who underwent open repair of rotator cuff tears between 1998 and 2013. The age distribution of the patients in our study was similar to the mean age of rotator cuff repair in the literature. The authors' cohort presented a higher proportion of patients who were obese as compared to the general population, which was also observed in the initial series by Roux and colleagues.^[@bibr19-2151458516635469]^ Of the 20 patients that underwent open repair, 18% ultimately underwent an arthroplasty of some type. This rate was higher than the 5% to 9% rate of arthroplasties among symptomatic rotator cuff tears.
